Course Overview
Special Education 101 is an 8-hour training program preparing educators to work with children with special needs in the classroom. Offered both in-person and online, this course provides an introduction to key concepts in special education such as inclusive environments, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), accommodations and modifications, assistive technology, data collection and tracking, and collaborating with families and service providers. Participants will gain hands-on experience developing lessons, supports, and strategies to help students with disabilities succeed academically and socially. Whether you are new to special education or looking to expand your skills, this training will equip you with fundamental knowledge and tools to be an effective special education teacher. You will gain the confidence and ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with diverse learning needs.
Course Objectives
Learn about the ARD and IEP process from referral to implementation
Develop present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP) statements
Create measurable annual goals and objectives based on student needs
Explore methods of data collection and progress monitoring
Discover instructional strategies and lesson planning techniques
Practice developing accommodations and modifications
Collaborate with families through the ARD and IEP process
Gain skills for tracking student data and reporting progress
Increase understanding of assistive technology options
Build confidence in ability to meet needs of students through IEP implementation
